Normal Heights Open Space

I’m gonna guess that not many people know about this Open Space, tucked so far out of the way as it is at the end of Eugene Pl in northeast Normal Heights. But if you can find it, it’s just the bit of escape that seems perfect for the neighborhood.

Let’s be clear- it is what it says it is. An open space. There isn’t anything to do here except wander around and enjoy a respite from city life. But there’s a good amount of space here fronting on the canyon entrance to Mission Valley used by I-15, and it’s broken up enough that on the rare occasions that a few other people are around, you won’t feel like you’re on top of each other.

There are a few paths leading down the hill-steps from the park entrance to the rim of the canyon, though they require a basic level of nimbleness to navigate. If you’re feeling adventurous or nihilistic (or both I suppose), you can also find a network of nominal trails that are worn in at ground level but disappear a few inches above among the overgrown bushes.

Because there always is in these sorts of parks, I’m confident that there’s a semi-treacherous way down to the base of the canyon. I haven’t found it yet, but I’m sure it’s there. There’s some good looking paths down there, so somebody must be going in.

You find these places tucked away all over San Diego. Some are generally useless, a precious few are magic, most are comforting- if unspectacular- escapism. This one is that. This is where you take a deep breath and sort things out. This is where you yell into the abyss.
